History
Former coal mining site which was built in te 1960s. It was developed as a modern drift mine by the National Coal Board, intended to supply nearby power stations with a reliable source of coal. The site was notable for its innovative use of conveyor systems and rapid coal handling techniques, which marked a step forward in mechanised mining during the period.
Mining operations continued for several decades, employing hundreds of workers from surrounding communities and playing a key role in the local economy. Like many other deep mines across the country, it eventually succumbed to the broader decline of the coal industry in the late 20th century. After its closure, parts of the site were repurposed, and it now serves primarily as an opencast coal disposal and rail loading point
