History
The Buzludzha Monument is an abandoned monument on Buzludzha Peak in the Balkan Mountains of central Bulgaria. It was built between 1974 and 1981 and officially opened on 23 August 1981. The monument was constructed to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, which later became the Bulgarian Communist Party. It was designed by architect Georgi Stoilov and is famous for its distinctive UFO-shaped design.
Inside the monument were large mosaic artworks depicting important moments in Bulgarian history, alongside images of communist leaders such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin. The building was used as a ceremonial hall and political museum, hosting official events and celebrations during Bulgaria’s communist era.
Following the collapse of communism in 1989, the monument was abandoned.
